This book is what put into my mind the idea of majoring in Philosophy. Saint Augustine writes so beautifully, it literally brought tears to my eyes. It isn't the words he uses, but the way he organizes his thoughts so precisely, powerfully, and passionately. I knew that majoring in philosophy would take me on a path to being able to see more beauty and truth in everything around me. St. Augustine's purpose was twofold when he wrote Confessions: 1) to explain to himself the significance of his conversion to Christianity, and 2) to do so in a way that would shake his readers to the point of convincing them that this was the one and only true faith. This book is a masterpiece of intellectual biography, written with an emotional intensity and ferocious self-honest analysis. Saint Augustine sought for the truth, no matter how painful: he sought truth. I will never forget the feelings of joy while reading this book; it felt like I had found something missing from me, which I didn't know existed until that moment.
really enjoyed this read- probably more of 4 1/2 stars.
