I enjoyed the characters and I thought the author did a convincing job of presenting a young girl's perspective.

** spoiler alert ** I really, REALLY liked this book. In fact, I couldn’t put it down and got through it in about 2 days. The pace was a bit slow, but Harkness moved the characters to different locations throughout the book which made it seem a bit faster. I absolutely loved Matthew (of course) and Diana. They made a fantasy tale all the more realistic as if this could really be happening. It was a mix of Outlander, Twilight, Sookie Stackhouse and a high school chemistry book. The scenes at Sept-Tour were well described and the best part of the book. I didn’t give it 5 stars because of a few things. 1. The looooong paragraphs describing actions/things that aren’t really important. For example, the almost ½ page of describing how to put oars in a boat. 2. Too much science talk in the last quarter of the book. 3. The “house” changing made it a little far-fetched. 4. Diana reminded me a little too much of Sookie Stackhouse, with the saving of Matthew by giving him blood. Witch-Fairy – too close. 5. Finally………..really? "Edward Cullen” traits in Matthew and vampire morals. Not really necessary in a non-young adult book. I understand that Harkness might be drawing it out for a big what-to-do when it does happen, but come on now. He's a vampire, it is what they do best!
