I liked this book a lot, and it certainly kept me hooked right through to the end. I can see why it is being compared to Twilight, since the vampires in it are quite civilized and a vamp/witch romance is at the center of the story. This is no teenage drama, however, and the addition of witches and daemons to the paranormal beastiary is a great touch. The heroine is a witch and it's fun to learn about her miscellaneous powers, such as flying, summoning water and wind, and my personal favorite, timewalking (could really use that one when late for an appointment...). I LOVED the character of the witches' house, a magical structure that adds bedrooms when guests arrive, slams and opens doors according to its mood, sighs and moans to express its opinion, and produces useful items on cue by pushing them out of cracks in the walls. The romance aspect of the story is perhaps its weakest feature, and I didn't quite believe the supposed passion between Diana and Matthew. Maybe the fact that they never really had sex has something to do with this, and the endless foreplay was pretty bland. The ending is an obvious setup for a sequel, since none of the conflicts are resolved. It feels a little funny when the story that was winding toward a dramatic climax is abruptly cut off in mid-stream.
