This is the second time a read this book - and I'm actually downgrading my ranking of it. I didn't remember a whole lot about the first reading, so revisiting it was an interesting experience. I have friends who ADORE Eggers and read his work religiously, and frankly this book didn't touch me. Pretty much at all. He admits that some of it is not as strong as other parts - and that is VERY true. I think that the entire section about the Real World: San Francisco told in the interview style was distracting and dates the book. It had a feel of being self-important and maybe the irony of that was the point, but I skimmed a lot of it, because it was boring. The section at the end when he discusses scattering his mother's ashes was probably the most powerful moment in the book for me, and contained the best writing. The book certainly didn't compel me to pick up another of his books - not that I wouldn't, but it doesn't give me incentive.

So preachy! And the characters are like caricatures, not real people.
