Dan Simmons, the author, has been a favorite for some years. His new book, published 1/07, surrounds the Arctic search for the Northwest Passage in the early to mid 1800s. It appealed, particularly, because I had just finished reading Antarctic Navigation (1995) by Elizabeth Arthur, outloud to my wife, and was in the mood for similar adventures. The "Terror" -- one of the ships involved in the search -- is beset by all manner of Arctic terrors from ice and cold, to a mysterious, possibly real, "monster" lurking on the floes. Moreover, the book's dedication is to the cast of one of my favorite films: "The Thing From Another World" (1951). How could I resist? So far (25%), it is better than I'd hoped.
Whatever, this book's gotten a lot of flack ala Corrections but at least no one claimed this to be the next De Lillo (Franzen, I'm LOOKING AT YOU). I think it was a funny, enjoyable story, plus also the author photo shows him pictured with a baby BEAR. You've gotta respect a man for that.
