This book, written in the 19th century is a fascinating read for those who like a scientifically bent background on the big bang and how/why we are truly spiritual beings having a human experience.
This was my least favorite Barbara Kingsolver. She basically knocks you over the head with a hammer with her insistent analogy between the controlling abusive father and imperialism. Both topics, abusive fathers and imperialism, deserve far more acknowledgment (if not exploration) of their inherent complexity, which can even be paradoxical. Her treatment of both is superficial and dismissive. However, her female characters she does a superb job in exploring their depths and intricacies, and so, for that, I didn't hate the book.
