Extras wasn't completely brain-missing, but there were moments when it was close. Scott Westerfeld shaped this story to follow a very Uglies-like trajectory. Aya is an "extra," an outider nobody crashing parties very like Tally in the original story. She also betrays her friends, but does some deep thinking in time for everything to end up bubbly. Even her love affair with Frizz feels familiar. Tally-wa herself makes an appearance near the end of the story, but her character feels a bit flat. All that said, I read the book pretty much nonstop over the course of 3 days, so it must have been somewhat happy-making.
the story behing the story of appropriation, fair use, and copyright law. negativland was sued by island records in 1992, not for re-purposing parts of the song Where the Streets Have No Name, but for releasing an album with a U2 spyplane over the name negativland.. and island records argued that U2 fans would be CONFUSED and it was a misuse of their image and intellectual property. big business sucks. mark hosler and crew get them back good in this tell-all.
~May have slight spoilers.~ In this thirteenth novel by Clive Cussler, we first see Dirk Pitt rescuing Maeve Fletcher. A descendant of Betsy Fletcher and Jess Dorsett; two of the few survivors of a British clipper ship which was caring prisoners to Australia's penal colony and was crushed in a typhoon. After the few wash up on shore of a deserted island Betsy and Jess discover a large amount of diamonds. Now an unknown source is killing marine life as well as humans. Dirk traces it back to owner of the second largest diamond empire and Maeve's father, Author Dorsett and her two sisters. This is what the book Shock Wave is based around. Of course there is a lot more to it than that, but we learn a lot of background info at the beginning of the book, like in most of the Dirk Pitt novels. I really liked this book, and I was sorry it took me so long to get to it. I do have to say though, that I loved it in a different way than the other Dirk Pitt novels if that makes sense. Shock Wave, though as mysterious, action/adventure and suspense filled as the other really got me on an emotional level for Dirk that I have to say I didn't know was missing before now. The book is one I did not want to put down and is probably me second favorite in the Dirk Pitt series so far. The reason I only gave the book four stars though is because I was a little wary of what was going to happen Dirk wise. As Dirk is getting older and that is mentioned in the book, so I think that did make me pause for a minute wondering how the book would play out. I would recommend for all Clive Cussler and Dirk Pitt fans, as well as readers of action-adventure.
