chilling. chuck, as always, is very descriptive to the last detail. he makes you loathe everything. this story is actually quite chilling in that it involves a series of events that inevitably happen again and again. despite the 3/5 rating, i definitely enjoyed it (i don't read very many books that give me the chills... then again... i don't read horror novels).
I read this book a few years back, but can remember laughing out loud at one point. To sum it up in a sentence or two, Straight Man is about a middle aged English Professor, and the disfunction around him, both within the school as well as within his personal life. The book really gets into some of the politics of academia, but does so with a humorous bent. The main character is one I didn't always agree with, but was always rooting for. He felt real and well rounded. Definitely a fun read.
This book has such an intriguing plot- catching up with two people and the state of their relationship on the same date each year for about 20 years. It was so frustrating though because I really didn't like the male character- he was a self-centered and destructive jerk. That really made it hard to want anything good to happen to him, which is sad because I think the point is that you're supposed to want the two to end up together in the end (and I sure didn't!). I thought the end was depressing, too, but that's all I have to say about that....
