This was by far the most popular fantasy we read in our class this year for our fantasy unit. Next time around, I will have all of the students read it, not only because of its great appeal, but it is a great way to introduce Ancient Greece and the pantheon of Greek Gods. Percy Jackson finds out that he is the son of Poseidon and a mortal, or in other words, a demi god with amazing powers around water. He has been given a quest to find Zeus' stolen lightning bolt of which he has been accused of taking. It is funny and adventurous and informative with great chapter titles like: "I Accidentally Vaporized My Pre-Algebra Teacher." I brought in the sequels to school (fifth one coming out in May) and they have moved quickly through the classroom. A great read that the movies have not ruined...at least not yet.
