Not being a quick reader, I devoted a good chunk of my life to completing this epic novel, which was my introduction to author Ken Follett. Although I'm not normally drawn to such tales of princes, damsels, knights, clergy and bastard children, I admit that the story drew me in. It was well-told, with sufficient twists and turns, and believable heroes and villains.
Liked the way history's woven into the story, and the strong human pull. There are parts of the book that are intense, and yet, there are moments of melodrama, and the "God I saw this coming" bits too. And of course, Hassan's uni-dimensional "goody two shoes" character was infuriating... Found many characters handled similarly -- just touch and forget... The book leaves you thinking about relationships all the same. And yes, it does prod you to go back and brush up on some history...
This guy is pretty funny.
