I had a very hard time putting this book down and with good reason. The events of the book take place over the span of a couple of days. For reasons explained early in he novel, time is a huge constraint for some of the principle characters. This is the first in a series and unlike many of its peers it goes from ordinary mortal world to almost completely immersing itself in a supernatural world in a matter of pages. It also utilized mythological and historical characters in a way I really enjoyed. Since I have studied English and some elements of comparative mythology, I really appreciated some of the various characters or allusions such as the world tree from Norse mythology and the common "virgin, mother, and crone" theme. I liked the fast pace and how it did not waste time but I had a hard time believing the two mortal characters at moments. They were just catapulted into something that would make most fiction writers head's spin but they don't seem to have too much trouble processing it. If I were them I would need a minute to wrap my head around everything. They either don't seem to need that or the pace of events does not allow enough downtime for that luxury.
