This book is a gold-medalist at my house. First of all, it's a pop-up book, so its automatically a favorite with my kids. But it also has story, and character, and setting! I don't mind reading it five or six times a day because I love it as much as my kids do! The book chronicles the misadventures of 10 artic penguins with ingenious pop ups that show the demise of each black and white bird, from number eight who gets captured by a polar bear in a chef's hat to number three who goes 'BANG' when he eats too much krill. A little gruesome? Not for my kids. The colorful illustrations and humorous mishaps had them laughing out loud in a cathartic Grimm-meets-Mother-Goose sort of way. And in the end, all the penguins come back to play - the ten little penguins were just playing tricks, and we get to see them in all their colorful pop-up glory again on the last page.

Read this book: 2009 - first reading To read my full review: http://ibeeeg.blogspot.com/2009/04/dr... Drums of Autumn spans three years (1768-1770) and is mostly set in the mountains of Colonial America-North Carolina. The setting...Colonial America, Revolutionary War America time periods are among my most favorite historical times. Drums of Autumn so feed my love for this historical time frame. Drums of Autumn was not centered on the politics of the time rather about the people - how they settled-how they managed. Therefore, Drums of Autumn focused in on the settling of Claire and Jamie. Claire, she adapts well. It amazes me how well though, learning all different kinds of skills (new to her)...amazing. Jamie, he already knows how to manage in unknown settings yet he still amazes me. Why? Jamie is a born leader and as I go through these Outlander books I see his leadership skills come more and more into play. He has not only physical strength but also intellect and emotional strength. I really liked how the author weaved the realities of daily life into the storyline. She does an awesome job of bringing my mind into the story where I can see the surrounding and have a feeling of the smells, taste and thoughts of the time.
