I thought the book was very well written and I enjoyed reading it, but I thought the stories were very depressing. I didn't relate to the characters or the marriages described. And I felt that Mengestu was trying to use the book as a comment on fiction, but I didn't appreciate it. Instead I felt manipulated by it and mistrustful of the story itself.
This is a fictional novel about Mormon pluralism and other sects broken off from the Mormon church. It goes back and forth between a 19th century wife and a current day (2004) sect. It would have been easier to read and more entertaining if he would have stuck to one or the other in my opinion
