A friend suggested this book to me, saying it was "what Twilight could have been, if it was well written." That piqued my interest immediately. I had already borrowed book one from another friend, so I decided to dive right in. Libba Bray is certainly a significantly more gifted writer than Stephenie Meyer (the Twihards just have to deal, it's true.) Gemma is a more spirited, engaging, and enjoyable heroine than Bella Swan could ever hope to be. And Kartik, her romantic interest, is deeply flawed, torn between his duty to his family and his feelings, much like Edward Cullen, but much less. . . wooden. Set in Victorian era England, it tells the story of Gemma, a girl whose mother has recently died, who begins to uncovered a deep secret about her family and a gift for magic she has inherited. Along for her journey are 3 of her boarding school mates, plain Ann and the radiant, popular Felicity and Pippa. The book is charming, moving, entertaining and most importantly, not infuriating. Looking forward to the two later books in the trilogy.
