I can't think of anything truly negative to say about this book, except that it took me two hours to fall asleep last night after finishing it. I may have read the last sentence, about the wheat, about ten times before shutting the book, and I honestly can't think of a writer with a superior handle on imagery and prose. I am madly in love with the prose, the perspective, and the rhythm! I saw a Norman Mailer quote in the back about Capote's grasp on that subject, and I agree completely -- it was almost poetic at times (the part about Nancy, Nancy's eyes, etc. sticks out for me, and many Perry sections). The scary part of the book is the true-crime factor of the murders. And the scary part is also that you end up with such strong feelings for Hickock and Smith (be they good or bad, or sympathetic or apathetic) that, at the moment with Perry reaches his hand through his cell bars, described in the most non-schmaltzy way possible, I cried, and had to go back a few pages to read what made me have that reaction. This is a fantastic book to read -- just beware. It's a hard-hitter, but well worth the time. I want to post all sorts of favorite excerpts here, but honestly, read it for yourself. From the moment it starts in the golden grain to the time it ends in the golden grain, you won't be sorry. You'll be a little disturbed, maybe a lot disturbed, by the story of the Clutters and Truman Capote's absolutely creepy way of telling it (albeit, genius)... but take the risk.
