Incredible. This book makes autism so much more real, and so much more understandable. It's interesting to notice some of the characteristics that most of us have, which are simply exaggerated in autistm. I also think it's fascinating how this condition, essentially a social disorder, is so much more disabling than most physical illnesses, or even mental illnesses such as mood disorders. Humans thrive on social contact, and lacking that ability is devastating.

I tried to read this book first but struggled with the Old English and didn't make it very far before loosing interest. I decided to try again listening to the book on audio and would highly recommend approaching the book this way. Although at heart it is a love story and this love story drives the plot, in the unabridged version, there is a lot of focus on the leading male character as a whole person. It is entirely written from his point of view and he is an endearing character but I wish the character of Lorna Doone had been explored a little more. Besides being mysterious and beautiful, it is hard to determine who she is.
