Wow. This book was a surprise. The last time I read something this action packed was the day I realized I could never get into this kind of books. But then I started reading and the first few pages got me hooked. Have you ever read a book that made your heart pound from beginning to end? I swear there were parts in the book where my heart was going to beat out of my chest. It wasn’t just the action that got my ticker thumping but the romance in this made my toes curl. They were so awkward at first but the chemistry was palpable. Lila’s characterization was a study in contradiction. She was so strong but so unsure of herself. She kept questioning everything and second-guessing herself. If it was any other book, I’d probably have been annoyed but she was so easy to relate to. Haven’t you ever felt like you weren’t good enough? Not up to anyone’s standards? Oddly enough, the waffling didn’t get to me as it normally would. Her strength came through in the way she was willing to set her own path, may it be to walk away from her brother and Alex or help Key, one of the psys who was desperate enough to approach her for help. I’ve always been a sucker for Marines myself, so Alex didn’t have to work as hard to gain my affections. Something about those men in their particular uniform screaming, “hoo-rah” just makes me want to uhm…clench something. Sorry, this book is YA, I know. Blame the author for penning a character as swoon-worthy as Alex. He was the right mix of sweetness and toughness that are essential for an unforgettable leading man in a book. The ending. Oh dear gawd. I didn’t see that twist coming! Brilliant. Hunting Lila was an engaging read. The pages were heady with the right blend of romance and suspense that will make you desperately hungry to read more. Incidentally, this book is not yet available in Canada. I had to utilize my ninja skills to acquire a copy!

This was my first Richard Russo book and certainly won't be my last. I can't remember the last time I laughed out loud so many times during the reading of one book. The character development is excellent and having grown up in a small town with more than it's share of local characters I felt right at home with Sully and Miss Beryl.
