I had heard so much about this book before I started reading that my expectations were pretty high. I had also heard about the controversial ending as well. However, In the Woods lived up to its billing. Tanya French's writing is clean, compelling, and engaging. She writes some of the best dialogue I've come across, period, and has created characters so real you almost expect to see them walking down the street. In the spirit of full disclosure, I'm not a huge mystery fan, but this book was literary enough for me to be able to really delve in and enjoy it. In addition, I didn't mind the ending at all. Perhaps it was because I knew what was coming, but my take is that in life, things are rarely as neat and resolved as we would like, and I enjoy writing that reflects that fact. To me, Adam/Rob's unresolved past was more about his character development and less about forwarding the plot. I could see how some might feel cheated, but I definitely don't believe that French simply didn't want to connect any more dots and so "quit writing." Excellent, excellent read.
