Twilight is the first book of the series by Stephenie Meyers. It is a very unusual book. Written very simply...a simple story which just happens to be about a human teenage girl who falls in love with a 108 year old vampire (Edward Cullen) who would forever look seventeen years old. Meeting in high school, it appears at first that he disliked her. Told in first person by the girl, Bella Swan, the book tells the story of their getting to know each other, meet each other's families, and fall in love. This is a charming book about first love and is a book that was hard for me to put down although it is a large book. I read it in one, all-night reading. It's also a book that can be read repeatedly--I have read it several times. I think that sometimes simple stories with simple writing serves a purpose. In Twilight the simplicity of the teen love story is charming, bringing up visions of first loves everywhere, of memories of days gone by.

As a Greek, specifically a Greek of Cephalonian descent, my love for this book may be baiased. I love the detail the author goes into when describing the Greek culture, as well of the specifics of the impact WWII had on Greeks and Italians, and how people can ignore the fact that society tells them to hate certain people, in favor of kinship and love.
