Hmmm...where do I start with the Twilight Series? First of all, I think that Twilight mania is disgusting--also creepy and very frustrating. Why do people love these books so much, adults and teenagers alike? The writing is mediocre at best; the main characters are extremely boring and unrealistic; the concept of love portrayed is completely skewed and unhealthy... In a word: Yikes! Even with my above gripes, maybe I would be able to ignore Twilight books, allow the world their little phase, and set my soap box aside. But, the fact remains that Stephanie Meyers is LDS. As a member of our church, I believe that she has a responsibility to be a good representative, especially since she's in the public eye. These books that she has written for teenage girls give those girls a very wrong, unachievable, unhealthy, skewed concept of love and marriage. And don't tell me that she doesn't! Don't give me "it's just a book." I hear girls and women alike raving about Twilight often, and saying that they all wish that they could have "a man like Edward," or a love like the one in the books. I believe that their new perception of love will hurt their existing and future relationships if allowed to become a personal standard. I know that most people disagree with me on this, so let me just finish with this: I have no problem with adults reading and even enjoying the Twilight books. They should be mature enough to read a book and either accept its philosophy or set it aside. And, if they decide that "Twilight is what love is," (and I know women that truly feel that way) then that is their business. But I am worried about our young girls who read these books, thinking that they are "good" because they're written by a Mormon. Sigh. Maybe someday someone will agree with me about this. Until then, I remain firm in my need to rant. :)
