As a white from the same period and from a similar smaller town in Alabama, I loved this book. It's multi-dimensional story, description of place in time and characterizations is so very true. It's like looking back at ones on life and saying that I wish I had had this insight at the time. This book was Astonishing in form and content. A MUST READ for any southern girl who where there in the 60's. I look forward to her second book and more to come.

I think I read this book at the wrong time. It's amazing how much beginning a book one day versus three days later can make a difference on how much I like/dislike it. This one was good, but for some reason it couldn't hold my attention for very long. I really got into it near the end, though, and will definitely at least try book two.
