Another one of the Oke books I had in a four book set. This one isn't my favorite, but it's an enjoyable read nonetheless. It is a sweet story about a brother and sister raising their three younger siblings after the death of their parents. Of course, love has to come into everything somewhere but the "love" story here was actually far less interesting than just reading about the day to day lives of these characters.

"If growing up is painful for the Southern Black girl, being aware of her displacement is the rust on the razor that threatens the throat. It is an unnecessary insult." Thus begins the story of Mauguerite or "Maya", a Southern Black girl growing up in various places across the US during the time of the Great Depression. Maya's story begins in Stamps, Arkansas where she and her older brother, Bailey, live with their grandma in the back of her store. There, Maya is raised to keep quiet, obey her elders and keep a steady faith in God and education. Her "to the book" life is turned around, however, when she and her brother are sent to St. Louis to stay with their parents and Maya's eyes are opened to the large and cruel world around her. After surviving rape and neglect, Maya then moves to California with her parents and she discovers her thirst for freedom, education and sexual desire. After many accelerated classes, a daring trip across the border, and an encounter with a nameless man in a dark bedroom..... comes a son, loved, cherished and a representation of the much deserved good fortune that was to follow. While reading this book, Maya Angelou showed me pain, love and bravery and now I can say that I know why the caged bird sings.
