It’s hard to believe, I myself can’t even believe it, that this was my introduction to Stephen King. No short stories, no Carrie, no Cujo, and definitely no Shining. I read a lot of R.L. Stine and Christopher Pike growing up but I was and still am too chicken to ready any of Mr. King’s work. As much as I love watching horror movies, I’m not too keen on reading them. I don’t think I’ll be able to go to sleep if I read a King book in bed (where I do half of my reading), or even alone in the bathroom doing a no. 2 (NOT where I do the other half of my reading, maybe just once in a while). Have you seen the Mist? It’s so depressing, I even asked Jon why he would make me watch such a thing. I enjoyed this book enough thatI might even try to stir up the courage and read the Stand. I expected more, or maybe it was wrong of me to read this without reading any of his fictional works first. Sure, I’ve seen some of the movie adaptations but I should know better than base the stories off of that right? I guess I just didn’t think this through. He does have some useful advice but it’s nothing I haven’t read or heard of before. I find listening to the Nerdist Writers Panel Podcast much more informative and fun (it is Stephen King though so maybe fun would be the wrong thing to look for). Don’t get me wrong, I like the book as a whole but I just really couldn’t appreciate the back story of Carrie, the Stand and all of the other books he referenced as much as I think I could have. I’ll just have to read this again after getting better acquainted with Mr. King. But for now, two stars it is.
