My travels through the Hard Case Crime library continue with book #6, The Confession by Domenic Stansberry. I’ve never heard of the author, but the premise sounded somewhat interesting. Jake Danser is a criminal psychologist who suffers from some weird black out disease. He loses time. He gets set up for a murder and chaos ensues. But maybe he really did commit the murder? Sounds cool right? Well, it could have been, but it wasn’t. See, the book is told from Jake’s perspective and it’s kind of hard to sympathize with him because Jake’s a dick. He’s got stupid long hair tied back in an ugly pony tail that he wears while cheating on his wife and doing blow. When his wife confronts him about his affair(s), he suddenly decides he wants to be with her again. This flip flopping makes no sense aside from the idea that he wants her when he realizes he can’t have her anymore. It’s childish and stupid and it doesn’t fit with the character at all. The book walks this fine line through the story as more clues come out about the murders that Jake was doing his psychology thing for and the one that he’s accused of. The idea that he might have committed these crimes is an interesting one, especially if he doesn’t remember doing them. Unfortunately since the book is told from his point of view, it’s hard to clarify that as he can be somewhat selective with the parts of the story that he reveals. The Confession is an alright book, but I don’t think that it’s a good example of the type of stuff that Hard Case Crime usually puts out. It felt like it was struggling to figure out what it wanted to be. It was a mystery, then a thriller, then a little bit of a horror book. Just make up your mind. If you’re looking to complete the Hard Case Crime library, then go check it out. Otherwise, I’d suggest sticking to some of the other books like Little Girl Lost or The First Quarry.
