It's possible that my opinion of this book was not so great only because I had such high hopes after her near-perfect debut of short stories. Lahiri's talent in weaving tight yet perfectly detailed stories fell short in this novel, which at times wanders as if it isn't quite sure what it wants to do or even say. Addendum: OK, I read this review I wrote above a few weeks later and decided I was too harsh because I had just re-read "Interpreter" recently. The book is pretty good. Is it comparably strong as "Interpreter"? No way. But it is overall a solid interesting story (though it does sometimes wander, I still think that!).

A classic I should have read ages ago. Vivid telling of early Winnipeg North End through the story of a Jewish family. Hoda is an overweight girl and then young woman... who can talk herself into any situation being for the good of humanity. Even when it is prostitution. Funny, sad, poignant, and incredibly well written. It is a little too long, but it is so well written you won't care.
