This book was painful to finish. I started it last year in the fall and forced myself to finish it with the new year. The premise and storyline are good, but the writing and execution of said storyline are pretty bad. The writer's overuse of similes and metaphor are what made me stop reading this book last year and upon picking up this book to finish it, the time off didn't improve my impression of the book at all. So the two stars are for the storyline only.

I confess. I enjoyed this. It's very Oprah's Book Club. It's very Today's book Club. But it was interesting, engaging, and often funny. I stayed up reading this. Sure, it's not literature. Sure, many of the characters are one-dimensional. (See Amazon reviews.) And, sure, it's NOT "To Kill a Mockingbird". But it was more than readable and quite enjoyable. And light... if it's possible for a story set during the Civil Rights Era can be considered light.

actually i only read the end, but it was disappointing (which i also heard from someone else who read the whole thing)
