D'Almeida is a historian who approaches the Nazi era through a very specific angle : the rarefied world of the nobility and high society, and how it forged an alliance with Hitler's party and helped it thrive. It's a fascinating social and political analysis, that shows how all sections of the privileged Germans (the aristocracy, the famous artists, the wealthy industrial families, the diplomatic circles, etc) more or less accepted Hitler's beliefs, often supported them with fervor, used their connections to gain more power, and received even more privileges in return. But at what price? Hitler was a cunning man, and he knew how to manipulate those people to his advantages. The fact is, without those people, he probably wouldn't have gained power that fast and that easily. D'Almeida's writing isn't anything special (you really can feel he's a historian more than a writer), but he has unearthed so many interesting anecdotes, facts, and aspects of German life during the Nazis, that his book is hard to put down. His painting of a German high society that the party tries to transform to make it its own is chilling and troubling, and he draws clever portraits of dozens of forgotten characters who compromised with the regime. He also subtly explains that most of those people who finally rebelled against Hitler did so not really because they didn't believe in Nazism anymore, but because they were horrified by the way the war was conducted. Anti-semitism, as stunning as it may seems for us, truly was a predominant trait of this society, and it existed before the Nazis. This book is also a fascinating cautionary tale about the dangers of power and privilege in dubious times: even if some people were in business with the Nazis only for practical or material reasons, the simple fact that they had a connection makes them complicit to the horrors of the regime. The way those people lived, in an enchanted, blind-sighted circle, appears to us, with the distance of time, horribly wrong and sick, yet few of those people, at the time, were aware of it.
