This is the first book in the series, I(Ryan) loved it! Just a little bit of violence and sort of funny.

** spoiler alert ** 3.5 stars I'm actually rating this lower than my enjoyment level (which was right around 4 stars) simply because I felt a bit cheated at how short the story is. By the way the story is written, it seems obvious that this must be the beginning of a series, but this read like the first few chapters, or a really short Part 1 of what could (or should) be a 3 or 4 part novel. Even just 2 parts and I would have felt better. The main reason for this is that the buildup implies that there is something big coming up, and then the book ends. It just ends! Platitudinous vows of friendship and newly-forged covenants are great, but I feel like the story should end when the characters actually fulfill those vows with action. Even in a series (or well written single-plotline series' anyway) the first book should read like a standalone that ends with unfinished business, which in the second book you realize was actually the beginning of a much larger story (this is one variation anyway). Now, working on the assumption that this is the beginning of a series, this felt more like a story up the point where the "goodies" decide to band together and fight the "baddies" but don't actually get around to doing it until later. I mean, is it just me, or does that feel like cheating a bit? Now, that aside, the writing in this was wonderful and very beautiful. I liked the characters a lot (especially Robert, though we see even less of him than our two MCs). I liked the world that was built -- we get just enough to know that it's a different world from our own set somewhere in the past, but not too much. It was interesting and read very easily on a day that I was having a difficult time trying to get into any book (I even tried to abandon reading for a movie, *shudder*), so I really enjoyed it. I just wish it hadn't ended so abruptly, which dampened my spirits towards its end.
