This is a very good book for one of those moments when you are upset with the world and you don't want to read yet another love story. In this case you might indentify just a little with the main character, Oberlus, a disfigured sailor who really hates the world and decides to live all alone on a deserted island that becomes his kingdom. He lives by his own rules which have nothing in common with the norms of the society. It is a great example of how violence gives birth to violence. As cruel as Oberlus may be, he is just the product of a cruel world. In fact, in "La Iguana" Figueroa manages to create a strong, complex character which you equally love and hate. I believe the best description of Oberlus is given by the main female character of the novel, Nina Carmen: "She admired Oberlus. It angered her that she could not avoid admiring the man she most hated in this world, just as she wanted and rejected him in the same time, in that inexplicable duality that seemed to govern all her actions or to be the driving force of all her feelings."
