Ender Wiggin at a very early age is drafted into a military strategic training program designed specifically for children called “Battle School”. This is because an alien race known as the “Buggers” has come twice to Earth in attempts to destroy all human life. Here, kids learn military strategy, and use what they have learned in their classes in a war simulation in a zero-G environment. In this game, two teams of twenty or more are pitted against each other in an attempt shoot, and disable the other team with lasers which have the ability to freeze people. This game is known as the battle room. Ender soon becomes very adept at creating new strategies, and abolishing old ones. Ender soon graduates where he uses a simulation of real Earth ships which fight simulated Bugger ships. Ender comes to realize that this simulation might not be just a simulation… Meanwhile, back on Earth, his brother Peter, and sister Valentine write essays on the internet which advocate an all out war with Russia. This would provide an opportunity for Peter to get into power that he hopes to use to make the world a better place. Things start to come into place, and for lack of better words, all hell breaks loose. I really liked this novel, and felt that the author worded many things to better immerse the reader in the text. The sequences that were described were sci-fi style, but were coming from a very relate-able kid. The author's style of writing is easy to understand even though the content is quite abstract and far-fetched in terms of being realistic. The characters all seem real, and all reach a realistic "breaking point" throughout the conflict of the novel. His personification of the children so intricately described to the minute detail is astounding. All Ender's friends are supporting characters, but as he describes himself, are all a part of him. This book was very effective, and persuasive in describing human emotion, and basic human instinct. The fact that we as humans were able to decide the fate of an entire race is mind boggling. Ender as a conflicted individual is also interesting to look at in retrospect. I think the audience will appreciate this novel, especially if they are fans of the sci-fi genre. This book can appeal to wide variety of people, and shouldn't be only described as a science fiction book. This book has become a required in high-schools across the country, and it's not hard to see why.
