Roseanna McGraw came to Sweden to see the sights, and managed to get herself killed. Her body is found outside one of the locks in the lake district and there is not one clue to go on. Martin Beck, the detective in charge of her case, refuses to give up. Beck, caught in a loveless marriage and depressed, becomes attracted to the lifestyle of Roseanna, a free spirit who enjoyed sex and books. The books was writen in the 1970's and it's jarring to be put back in a time when transaltantic communication requried operators, computers don't exist, and DNA is not even known. The interesting thing in these books is the timecapsule they give you of both the late 60's and early 70's and a riviting police procedual. Worth your time!

Amazingly horrific....try to get through this book if you can, it's pretty evil, but beautiful in the way Zola describes the characters. Very readable but the story gets so insane you can't believe this is continuing. I never imagined the book would take the turns it does, but you'll see... "their rows always ended in blows...."
