Somehow, I will describe this collection of short stories as a mixture of Lovecraft, Borges, Pynchon and Bukowski, with some genre scifi thrown in for good measure. They examine our new gods: the gods of urban decay and ironworks and existential misery. Ellison takes what appears to be a series of contemporary short stories, and throws in fantasy elements as an additional commentary on modern subject matter. Intellectual and plot-driven, pulpy and experimental, Ellison gives the best of many worlds - as long as you are okay with an intense misanthropy.
