I'm giving this three stars because I wanted something light and quick while recovering from surgery, and this fits the bill. It's an entertaining story - kept my interest enough to want to finish the book. The writing is better than average, the story fun but not too taxing on the brain. Recommended for rainy days, the beach and housebound persons.

This book was a quick read for me, which was refreshing after reading the clunker I just finished by Wally Lamb (it was a great book, don't get me wrong, but EPIC!) I gave it three stars because I couldn't quite get a finger on the main character, Lillian. The story was interesting, sad in many parts, and I enjoyed the time period and historical references. However, her journey seemed undeveloped in certain parts and there was a definite lack of denouement. I think if Wally Lamb had written this novel then it could have been a 1500 page story. She does trek across American and up to Alaska! However, this story has shy of 300 pages - there just wasn't enough time to develop every character and detail Lillian's journey. I was suprisingly satisfied with the ending. Not what you except. That alone may be a good reason to tempt you to read this book.
