I first read this book in high school, and then again in a women's lit class in college. Unfortunately, at the time, I didn't get it. Having been through a divorce, and an "awakening" of sorts (even featuring a handsome rake!), Chopin reads a lot differently. I'd argue that it should be recommended reading for any adult women who A. read fiction, and B. have found their path, but it's likely to be overly illustrative if wants, needs, and paths are still murky. Illustrative in that way that makes one say "I totally hate my life, and this relationship is a sham." Arguably, Chopin's protagonist doesn't exactly make a proactive choice, but two very different kinds of good lovin' from two very different men turns the light on...even if it's sort of dim...kind of like a New Orleans morning.
