Okay, I picked this up because I read the prequel and loved it. The first book, The Year of Secret Assignments, had me in stitches and I thought I'll pick up book 2 for a laugh. Wow was I wrong! Yes there are a lot of funny bits to it, but mostly this book is about ghosts and haunting, and serious issues like child pornography, mental illness, home town history, relationships, the dangers of rumors, and much much more. Told in official school letters, homework assignments, blog entries, and an essay test; this one blew me out of the water. It took a few chapters to get into it, but boy did I. Especially when Lydia started talking to the Ghost on her computer! LOL. Em, Cass, & Lyd are back in this excitingly Gothic tale of how their school was overtaken with Ghost paranoia during their final year of school. Em's quest this year is to prove that there is actually a ghost haunting the art rooms & Lyd's it to not get back with Seb, even if she does want to. But with two new students at Ashbury the rumor mill is percolating, both with the students and the teachers. Riley & Amelia are unlike any other teen at Ashbury. They are the new scholarship students and at first they skipped classes, didn't turn in homework, etc. But after awhile they started to be some of the best students the school had to offer, that is until the teachers found out about their past. This is a riveting tale of ghosts, both real and imagined. If you like to laugh I would encourage you to listen to this and the Year of Secret Assignments on Audio book as they are more fun that way.

** spoiler alert ** In days past, too long ago, I had read an inferior translation of Beowulf, which is tantamount to never having read it at all. Seamus Heaney's translation has revealed a tight and beautifully constructed study of a warrior king's life. As a young man, he kills the monster Grendel and his mother. When his lord Hygelac dies, Beowulf becomes king of the Geats (who inhabited Southern Sweden) and rules for fifty years. But then he comes up against fate: Do not give way to pride. For a brief while your strength is in bloom but it fades quickly; and soon there will follow illness or the sword to lay you low, or a sudden fire or surge of water or jabbing blade or javelin from the air or repellent age. Your piercing eye will dim and darken; and death will arrive, dear warrior, to sweep you away. In Beowulf's case, the last battle is against a dragon who is laying his people low, because someone had stolen a cup from his gold hoard. The Geat warrior goes by himself to face the dragon, while his much rewarded retainers run for their lives. What ensues is heroic and worthy of the hero. And he does find one person who helps him in his last battle. Beowulf's sword fails him and he is assaulted by the unnamed dragon, or "sky-plague" as a kenning describes him: Then the wound dealt by the ground-burner [another kenning] earlier began to scald and swell; Beowulf discovered deadly poison suppurating inside him, surges of nausea, and so on, in his wisdom, the prince realized his state and struggled toward a seat on the rampart. The pagan Vikings saw themselves as prisoners of an ineluctable fate. Although Beowulf refers to Christianity time and again, there are no Christians in the story, which takes place some time before Olaf I Tryggvason had the Norse converted from their Asatru ways. Thanks to Heaney's translation, I think that Beowulf could stand on its own side by side with the great Icelandic sagas that were to follow.

From the novel: "The sky was unclouded and the early sun shed a heavenly mildness on the scene; it was difficult to imagine, on that blithe, fresh, and smiling morn, that the city lay gasping, like a man whose life is being throttled out of him by a maniac's hands, in the dark clutch of the pestilence." One of the few books I've read where the author has woven such beautiful phrases within the raw tragedy and real triumph that is the story of character Kitty Fane. Despair, disease, death, and ultimately faith are all players in Kitty's life lessons. After marrying Walter, who she did not love, they move from England to Hong Kong where she finds entertainment in the arms of one of the members of their social circle. When her husband finds out, he issues an ultimatum to which she eventually surrenders. Together they travel to an epidemic-ridden village, where Walter can practice his bacteriology experiments, assuming his hope to find some relief to the cholera that is rampaging through the area. Meanwhile, Kitty finds purpose and reason while assisting with work at a local Catholic orphanage. Their stay eventually ends with Walter's contraction of cholera and subsequent death. Kitty returns to Hong Kong and, in a sort of twist of fate, is invited to stay with the family of the man with whom she had an affair. She learns even more of herself during that time, and realizes that she needs to go home to England. From there, the story comes to a close with Kitty preparing to go to yet another place in the world, but this time with confidence, hope, and faith in her future.
