Grant Morrison's All-Star Superman was the first Superman comic I read. I picked it after my first months of only reading Batman, and only because it was cheap and because I'd liked the Batman stuff Grant Morrison had written. And then he went and made me fall in love with Superman and showed me what he was really like. Like many people, thanks to television and movies and popular culture in general, I had the wrong idea about the character and thought he was pompous and boring and no longer inspiring. What Grant Morrison manages here is to capture the essence of the character, and it's something that's obvious even to someone who's never read a Superman comic before. I don't know if that makes sense, but this is a great book and one of the comics closest to my heart.
