I love Donalyn Miller. Her blog is absolutely fantastic. I really love her approach to teaching "language arts"--to me, it seems completely common sense. Clearly what we're doing now isn't working; the whole worksheet/book report/booklog thing is spiritually/intellectually killing all kids, whether they're the strongest or weakest readers. So her philosophy makes sense (and obviously works). H o w e v e r, I have to say I was a tiny bit disappointed in this book by itself. It's more a sustained argument for her approach, which may be perfect for people who are not sure about her philosophy. For those who are totally excited by her philosophy...the book doesn't really give me a good grasp of what her day in the classroom looks like, and that's what I was dying to see. A brief glance at the book makes it sound like her kids spend every minute of every day just reading, but that's clearly not the case, especially since she has a block schedule. She makes occasional references to the things she does with her class (defining genres, for example, or individual meetings, or the kids presenting book commercials) but never spells out what percentage of the day and/or week she spends on actual activities like those and what percentage her kids spend reading. I just wanted to get an idea of how she shapes her day, and what kind of analytical tools she teaches, and so on. So the book was a little less immediately useful than I was hoping for.
