There are various reasons why I should've loved this book. For starters, the main character - Christopher - is deeply fascinating. An autistic child growing up in an unstable home environment, his view of the world is so simple and simultaneously profound, I was often left staring at the cover in shock. Haddon's unflinching immediacy, established through the incredible voice present throughout the novel, sucked me into the story from the first page (which I appreciate because I hate books that take 200 pages to get into). Additionally, the cover art kicks ass. As I am definitely a person who tends to judge a book by its cover, this was particularly exciting for me. The unique format of the novel was intriguing: instead of following the normal numerical pattern, each chapter is labeled with a prime number. Finally, Haddon is British, which automatically means I loved all the British-isms like "boot" instead of "trunk" and "A level maths" instead of whatever the US has. I loved these because I am lame and tired of being American. I've made peace with that. So like I said. I wanted to love this book. The problem is, it was quite depressing. This poor kid Christopher never gets a break, and you want him to because in spite of all his emotional and mental shortcomings he's actually a genius and totally relatable as an individual. The end of the novel is about as dissatisfying as an ending can possibly get, too: no crossed t's or dotted i's or anything. And maybe that's Haddon's comment on the real world - life is rarely as perfectly tied off in the end as we want it to be - and maybe his point is that life is just a pattern: things get screwed up, go great for awhile, get screwed up again, and amend themselves once more. Maybe all that's true, but it doesn't mean I have to like it.
