A young woman who's spent her whole life surrounded by historical works (her family owns an antiquarian bookstore) is summoned by a beloved, prolific, reclusive author to write her biography...and tell the true story of her life for the first time in nearly fifty years. Of course that life has been dark & strange, with old houses, family secrets, forbidden passions, ghosts and every other element a gothic romance needs. In the process of recording the author's story the young biographer has to confront a dark secret of her own. Now I've never read Jane Eyre or Wuthering Heights, but this modern take on such stories had me hooked just a few chapters in. The atmosphere is killer (sometimes literally) and the mystery will keep you guessing until the very end...then make you gasp. There are some provocative elements, including sadism, incest & murder, but I suspect the graphicness isn't much more than what you'd find in nineteenth century gothic tales.
