I didn't get a clear idea of what happened to the main character in his youth, then it jumped onto a vaguely described alien encounter (the "fall"). His mother is in some sort of virtual afterlife - again very vague. Jump onto the ship - the host of characters are interesting from a technical point of view - but they lack depth. Its like a crew from a new (but doomed) Star trek series, 1 cyborg, 1 multiple personality, 1 empath, 1 .. errr, ummm, i know.. vampire!! Overall tiresome read and didn't connect with the characters or plot. If you asked me why they were doing what they were doing - I wouldn't be able to tell you. I like hard sci-fi with all the intricate details. This was just hard going.
