Totally engrossing from the first sentence. Read straight through my 1.5 hr flight and eager to finish on way home. A brilliant and haunting novel. It makes the reader question narrative identity and the truth found in books (and people). Will require me to read it again and examine from a fresh perspective. Reminds me of why Auster is such an important voice in contemporary American literature. Highly recommended to everyone.

I was never a Van Halen fan, I'm just a fan of crazy and weird. And David Lee Roth is crazy and weird (and kind of annoying). That's why I'm so disappointed by this book. I feel cheated, swindled and robbed. I demand a refund, not just a monetary refund but a refund for time wasted. I expected so much more from the man who made some of the most entertaining videos back when MTV actually showed music videos. Remember music videos? If not then you need to get the hell off of my lawn. Honestly this book was so damn boring and schzio it was difficult to follow. Roth lays it out like this. Eddie Van Halen, crazy talented, but also an ungrateful jerk-wad. If it weren't for Roth's focus drive and showmanship propelling the band to stardom, Eddie only would have been a well known studio musician instead of a rock legend. I agree with this sentiment, after all I can't imagine anyone else in the band writing songs like Hot for Teacher and thinking up such videos like Pretty Woman. The quality of the band's music and videos did go down hill after Roth got das booted. According to Roth, the seeds of mistrust were planted when Eddie started cheating on the band when he did a guitar solo for Michael Jackson and worked on his wife's (Valerie Bertinelli) TV movies as side projects. Yet when Roth did the Crazy From The Heat EP, Eddie couldn't handle it and cried like a little girl. If Roth isn't discussing his time with the band or his childhood the rest of the book is just filler, and towards the end its mostly filler until we get to the reunion of sorts and the '96 VMA awards. Remember that awkward appearance? I guess Roth and the Van Halens are trying the reunion thing again, this time minus the bass player. Eddie's son Wolfgang is filling in for him. Good luck, but at this stage in the game they're all too damn old to pull it off. I don't care what you say, rock n' roll is a young man's game. When the majority of your fans are old enough to be in the geriatric ward of the hospital its time to throw in the towel. Could there be anything more embarrassing than performing Jump in an adult diaper? Well, I guess performing the Harlem Shuffle in a wheelchair is a little bit worse.
